How to Descale an Espresso Machine (and How Often You Actually Need To)

Your shots have gotten slower. The machine takes longer to come up to temperature, the steam wand sputters instead of hissing, and the espresso tastes flat in a way you cannot quite name. Nothing is broken. Your machine is just full of limescale, and it has been building up quietly since the day you plugged it in.

To descale an espresso machine, you run a descaling solution through the water system to dissolve the mineral deposits that hard water leaves behind in the boiler and pipes. The whole thing takes about twenty minutes of mostly waiting. The two parts people get wrong are what they pour in and how often they bother. Both answers depend on your water, not on a generic interval printed in a manual.

Why home espresso machines scale up faster than you would think

Most espresso machines under $300 use a thermoblock rather than a traditional boiler. A thermoblock is a metal block with a narrow channel drilled through it, and water heats as it passes through. That design is why your machine is ready in thirty seconds instead of five minutes.

It is also why scale matters more. A large boiler has room to spare. A thermoblock channel is roughly the width of a pencil lead, so the same mineral layer that a boiler shrugs off will meaningfully choke a thermoblock. You feel it first as slower flow and a machine that struggles to hold temperature.

How often to descale, based on your water

There is no universal schedule, because a machine in Minneapolis and a machine in Portland are living completely different lives.

The USGS classifies water hardness as calcium carbonate: "0 to 60 mg/L (milligrams per liter) as calcium carbonate is classified as soft; 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L as hard; and more than 180 mg/L as very hard."

Match your water to a rough interval:

  • Soft water, under 60 mg/L. Every four to six months. Much of New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Gulf Coast sit here.
  • Moderately hard, 61 to 120 mg/L. Every three months. This covers a large share of the country.
  • Hard, 121 to 180 mg/L. Every six to eight weeks.
  • Very hard, above 180 mg/L. Every four to six weeks. If you are in San Antonio, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, or much of the upper Midwest, assume you are here until a test says otherwise.

You do not have to guess. Your municipal water utility publishes an annual water quality report with hardness in it, and a hardware store test strip costs a few dollars. Test once, set a recurring reminder, and stop thinking about it.

If you pull more than four shots a day, move up one tier. Volume matters as much as hardness.

What to descale with, and why vinegar keeps coming up

Search this topic and you will find a hundred people recommending white vinegar. It is cheap, it is already in your cupboard, and it does dissolve limescale. It is also the single fastest way to shorten your machine's life.

Vinegar is acetic acid, and acetic acid is aggressive toward aluminum, which is what many thermoblocks and some boilers are made from. It also attacks the rubber and silicone seals that keep a pressurized system watertight. Whole Latte Love, a specialist espresso retailer, puts it plainly: "we always recommend against using vinegar for descaling. You risk leaving behind a terrible aftertaste and may cause damage to sensitive internal components."

Damage from vinegar corrosion is also the kind of thing a technician can identify, and it will generally not be covered under warranty.

Use a descaler matched to what is inside your machine:

  • Stainless steel or brass internals. A sulfamic acid descaler such as Dezcal works well.
  • Aluminum internals. Use a gentler lactic-acid based product. Durgol Swiss Espresso is the common recommendation here.
  • When the manufacturer sells its own. Use theirs. It costs a few dollars more and removes any argument about warranty coverage later.

Citric acid sits in the middle. It is far safer than vinegar and many people use it successfully, but it can leave a residue if you do not rinse thoroughly, and a few manufacturers specifically ask you not to use it. Check your manual before you reach for it.

The actual descaling steps

The sequence is nearly identical across machines.

  1. Empty everything. Remove the water filter if your machine has one, since descaler will ruin it. Empty the drip tray and take the portafilter out.
  2. Mix and fill. Follow the ratio on the descaler package. Fill the tank with the solution.
  3. Run it through both paths. Pull roughly a third of the tank through the group head. Then run some through the steam wand, which people skip and then wonder why the wand still sputters. Both paths have scale in them.
  4. Let it sit. Leave the remaining solution in the machine for fifteen to twenty minutes. This is where the actual dissolving happens. Rushing this step is why a descale sometimes seems to do nothing.
  5. Finish the tank. Run the rest through, alternating between group head and wand.
  6. Rinse twice. Fill the tank with fresh water and run it completely through. Then do it again. Two full tanks of clean water is the difference between good espresso tomorrow and a strange chemical note in every shot for a week.
  7. Reinstall the filter. Put in a fresh one, not the one you took out.

Your first shot after descaling may taste slightly off. Pull one and dump it, then get back to normal.

Brand quirks worth knowing

Machines differ in how they tell you it is time and how they want the cycle run.

  • Breville. Many models have a descale indicator light and a dedicated descale mode that walks you through group head and steam wand phases. Follow the mode rather than free-pouring.
  • De'Longhi. These often have aluminum in the water path, which makes the vinegar warning especially worth heeding. De'Longhi sells a lactic-acid descaler formulated for their machines.
  • Nespresso. The cycle is largely automated and the machine tells you when to run it. Nespresso descaling kits are matched to their system, and the instructions differ between Original and Vertuo lines.
  • Ninja. Newer espresso models track cycles and prompt you on the display. The prompt is based on shot count, not on your water hardness, so if you are on hard water you will likely need to descale before it asks.

What descaling will not fix

Descaling addresses mineral buildup in the water system. It does nothing for coffee oils, and those are a separate problem with a separate solution. The same split applies to drip coffee makers, which scale up just as readily even though people descale them far less often. If your espresso tastes bitter or rancid rather than flat, you likely need to backflush with a cleaning detergent and scrub the shower screen and portafilter basket. If flow is uneven and channeling through the puck, that is a grind or tamp issue, and a machine with a built-in grinder lets you adjust it without buying a second appliance. If the machine is loud and struggling but flows fine after a descale, the pump may simply be aging.

Keep the machine you already like

A machine that gets descaled on schedule keeps pulling the shots it pulled when it was new. One that does not will slowly get worse in ways you stop noticing, until you decide the machine was never that good and start shopping for a replacement it did not need.
